Android Wallpaper Apps Misreporting

Some reported that Android Wallpaper Apps are stealing information from smartphones but developers deny it.

Yesterday I wrote about the whole BlackHat conference and MyLookout findings about apps stealing info like voicemail data, phone number and subscription ID.

Well today is a bit different story at least from what others report.

Blog called Android Tapp had chance to talk/chat with the developer named “jackeey, wallpaper” or “IceskYsl@1sters!” who denies the accusations by VentureBeat, The Wall Street Journal, CNET  and many more, for stealing the voicemail data, browsing history, text messages etc..

But developers denial is a bit weird to me….

Developer said:

“In my applications I collected some device data, not user data.”

“I collected the screen size to return more suitable wallpaper for the phone.”

“I also collected device id,phone number and subscriber id, it has no relationship with user data.”

When I read that somebody is stating in article that he is collecting:

  • Device ID
  • Phone Number
  • Subscriber ID

of my phone… that is

  • MY Data
  • MY Phone Number
  • MY Subscriber ID!

So how is that falsely being accused?

I guess I’ll wait few more days till this whole mess with Android Apps is cleared up in blogsphere…
