It looks like Apple and Microsoft may be talking as the possibility surfaces that Apple may dump Google as its default iPhone search in favor of Bing, according to BusinessWeek. While that sounds like an unlikely marriage, the growing rivalry between Google and Apple over the Nexus One smartphone may thaw the frosty relationship between Apple and Microsoft. Given that, Microsoft’s Bing search engine doesn’t stand as a real rival of Apple. By using Bing instead of Google, Apple avoids throwing any unnecessary carrots to Google while Microsoft is sort of the third wheel here; they’re not a major player in the mobile battle but they score major business for Bing. Sounds like a win for both parties, though Google doesn’t stand to lose much crumbling of its current throne.
In order for iPhone owners to search with anything other than the default browser, they have to download an application. So my question to iPhone owners is, do you really care enough to spend the time to switch? Does the default application gain a giant advantage in that case? My guess is yes, making the war for search supremacy all the more relevant.
