Geocities once most popular free webhosting service (by Yahoo) is shutting down today. After nearly decade of being in service they will shut down millions of websites. I remember creating my first HTML website via Geocities because at the time hosting was ridiculously expensive ($40-$60 per month) vs today.
Am sad to see that such services are going to be shut down, many like my self created first websites there and visit from time to time. Services like Archive Team is trying to save geocities pages from millions of people (Read more. So far they managed to save about 10 Terabytes of data but that is not nearly enough what Geocities is holding still.
Nobody really knows why Geocities is shutting down except that is using a lot of data and everything is still HTML 1.0.
