As previous (10y ago) hardcore Windows user I think there are some Freeware I download even now days on my VMware Windows clones. Over the past few years there are just things I download and install each time I install Windows and those are….
AVG or Avira – Great free antivirus software and must have due to windows vulnerabilities.
iTunes and Winamp – If you don’t have these programs installed you are insult to Music Industry 
Fillezilla – An ftp client , by now even 65 year old people do FTP uploads to their webhosting! So do I and so do you!
Firefox – Come on be honest do you really really like IE so much? Must download Firefox!
Search and Destroy – That nasty Malware-Adware can’t live without Windows , with Spybot you remove every single BIT of’em.
Skype – Who does not want to call for free? Or call internationally someone for almost cheapest rate there is!
Adobe Flash Player and Adobe PDF Reader – Adobe products that you must download even if you don’t want to, many people send PDF’s and trust me 70% of websites have Flash installed ..How do you think you watch YouTube videos it’s certainly not QuickTime!
I know there is more freeware tools that are just awesome but in general let’s face it without freeware above many of Windows users can’t live now days!
