I have been in Domain business for past few years now, bought a lot of domains for startups. Find out what are my favorite domain name places to buy domain name from.
My personal favorite is 1and1 because domain name gets registered within few hours (usually 3 hours or so). Also 1and1 offers many features for free where others domain registrars charge you for such services. For example 1and1 offers you free email, free PRIVACY protection which others charge you $8 and up!
My second favorite domain registrar is NameCheap they do not offer much stuff currently they do offer free privacy protection and bunch of other stuff.
So forget about the GoDaddy and other “leading” registrar services, they overcharge a lot because all you really pay at the end is “Brand” even tho .com stays always the same, you can’t damage it so why paying GoDaddy $18 when you can buy same thing at 1and1 for $8 with more features?

Name.com, Fabulous, Moniker, Dynadot – all aces in my book.
@domainergeek: If you go professional yes I would advise people to go with Moniker, NS, name etc…but for people that don’t own or are not into domainer business why spending money on moniker. Let me make a nice price example:

I like 1and1, beware of dynadot, i registered cloudcomp.com along with mycloudcomp.com and all of a sudden, it was owned by someone else in inda, then someone in ny, if you research the ownership look at transfer dates. they dont add up
